Redrawing the map

INTRODUCING SIP POWER GAS

Part of our mission is about enabling you to make smart decisions when planning for sustainable adventures. Developing the new SIP Power Gas as the first step within our own Sustainable Improvement Program is all about setting a new standard in the category of sustainable outdoor fuels. By choosing a SIP Power Gas to fuel your next adventure, you support production of biogas and help phase out fossile fuel. Together, we make future adventures even more sustainable!

DRIVING THE DEMAND FOR SUSTAINABLE FUEL OPTIONS

Fuel is one of the largest drivers of unit sales within the Primus assortment, the only truly “consumable” product within our line. This fact alone allows us to make the greatest strides towards reducing our impact on the environment, focusing on just one product – fuel.

why sip power gas?

reduced co2 footprint

Limited transportation together with enabling the production of biogas significantly reduces the climate impact when compared to our Power Gas.

Sourced in europe

Sourced in Europe, closer to our key markets – from the steel used, to the fuel production and the filling of the canister.

Ensuring biogas production

SIP Power Gas secures and supports the production of biogas. For every canister you buy, you make sure that the same amount of biogas made from food waste is produced.

primus sip power gas

Is a sustainable outdoor fuel option with a performance that mimics the reliable Primus Power Gas. By supporting production of bio-based gas and moving production to Europe, we take the next step to redrawing the outdoor fuel map and reduce our environmental footprint. This step is a part of a new Primus sustainability initiative, covering all aspects of developing a new Primus product as well as returning to our existing line of products for further improvements. We call it SIP – our own Sustainable Improvement Program. The first launch within this program is the SIP Power Gas.

MOVING TOWARDS A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

One of the main goals of developing SIP Power Gas is to offer a sustainable canister fuel option and lead the way in phasing out fossil fuels used in outdoor cooking. SIP Power Gas is a first step in the path towards this future and is the first cornerstone product within the Primus Sustainable Improvement Program – SIP.

SIP helps Primus focus on sustainability when updating products or developing the best cooking equipment for conscious adventurers. Providing the most fuel-efficient stove options available, the choice of materials we use, building stoves to be life-long companions, and the fact that we offset the carbon emissions for all Primus fuel all play a part in achieving this goal. We aren’t there yet but we are looking ahead and making this journey with future generations in mind.

ekoenergy-labelled

The SIP Power Gas is EKOenergy-labelled. The EKOenergy label is global, non-profit and an independent mark of quality, supported by environmental NGOs. EKOenergy-labelled energy fulfils strict sustainability criteria. The label also finances renewable energy projects in developing countries. In this way, EKOenergy consumers contribute to the fight against energy poverty and climate change.

Reduced co2 footprint

Our goal is to deliver the strongest product possible, from a sustainability perspective. When we move production of SIP Power Gas closer to our largest markets, we decrease the distance the fuel is transported. This results in a significate reduction of the canisters' climate impact than regular Primus Power Gas.

To assess and evaluate environmental impacts connected to SIP Power Gas, we conducted a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) screening with aid from an independent third party. When developing a product with as little environmental impact as possible, all the steps in the supply chain need to be under evaluation. This means that every link in the process has been reviewed in detail to examine the environmental impact of each step. The ultimate goal is to deliver the strongest product possible, from a sustainability perspective.

With the input from the LCA screening, the result of our changes indicates that our new SIP Power Gas will have significantly less climate impact than regular Primus Power Gas.

Sourced in europe

All components of SIP Power Gas are sourced in Europe – from the steel of the canister to the fuel. Partnering with European resources, we produce and fill the final SIP Power Gas canisters in Southern Europe. We moved production of SIP Power Gas closer to the majority of Primus’ customers and markets. All components of this gas are sourced in Europe – from the steel of the canister to the fuel. Having production near our global headquarters improves the supervision of production and the origins of raw materials. Partnering with one of Europe’s leading bio refineries, along with other European partners, we produce and fill the final SIP Power Gas canisters in Southern Europe instead of South Korea.

Developing local resources and partnerships reduces the total distance traveled for each SIP Power Gas canister to get to the store shelf.

ENSURING PRODUCTION OF GAS FROM BIO-BASED WASTE

For every SIP Power Gas canister, we purchase the same amount of biogas (made from food waste) which is then used in locally produced products. This minimizes transportation and supports production of biogas. This is the first step in our journey of providing a more sustainable stove fuel – we have secured and supported production of biogas.

For every SIP Power Gas canister, we purchase biogas made from food waste instead of fossil-based fuel. This secured biogas comes from a dedicated production facility in Sweden that then sends the biogas to a nearby distributor who inserts it directly into locally produced products. These partners then certify that the same amount of fuel that resides within SIP Power Gas canisters is the exact same amount of biogas that was placed into the market.  It is made sure that the biobased gas we have claimed is not put to the market as bio-based, to prevent that the properties is not accounted for several times.

This is the first step in our journey of providing a more sustainable stove fuel. Although this model does not include filling our SIP Power Gas canisters with “green molecules,” we have taken one major step – we have secured and supported production of biogas.

What is biogas?
Biogas, biodiesel, and other biofuels are substitutes for their fossil-fuel counterparts. Instead of pulling virgin materials out of the planet, biofuels leverage waste and residues from the food industry* that would otherwise end up in the landfill to make a biobased oil. The biobased oil is treated with hydrogen to produce hydrocarbons and is then refined into various products, such as gas or diesel.

*Current legislation prohibits vegetable products that could be used for food. Only waste and residues are allowed to make biobased oil.

performance

The SIP Power Gas mimics the performance of our reliable Power Gas, a true all-round gas that performs in most outdoor cooking conditions.

Our new SIP Power Gas ensures high pressure output around and even below zero degrees Celsius, just like our regular Primus Power Gas. But we are aware that there are many factors affecting the performance of cooking in cold conditions. This being the case, we recommend Primus Summer Gas during warmer temperatures, and Primus Winter Gas for the best fuel performance in cold weather, below zero degrees Celsius. For maximum reliability in extreme cold conditions, we urge the use of liquid fuel.

DRIVING THE DEMAND FOR SUSTAINABLE FUEL OPTIONS

moving towards bio-based fuel

One of our main goals of developing the SIP Power Gas is to lead global brands and markets to build the resources, steps, and product demand needed to limit and phase out fossil fuels used in outdoor cooking. In other words, developing our SIP Power Gas enables us to start redrawing the outdoor-fuel-map by showing new ways of replacing old methods and materials with more sustainable alternatives.

A CARBON DIOXIDE NEUTRAL FUEL

While we keep making strides towards providing the most sustainable fuel available with SIP Power Gas, we will continue to offset the carbon emissions for all Primus gas and metal gas canisters. For the past nine years Primus fuel has been “climate neutral” and has donated and supported green initiative projects via First Climate.
