Camping is a good reason to get away from our screens. BUT, there are some apps that were practically made to be enjoyed with friends around a campfire. Rather than absorb our attention, some apps encourage us to engage with the people we're with.
We think it's great to keep phone use to a minimum while we're enjoying the great outdoors, but these 5 phone apps are perfect for engaging your group at the campground.
1. Sky Map
Love stargazing? The night sky becomes even more fascinating with a little help from Sky Map, an app that helps you identify stars, planets, constellations and nebulae. You'll learn about the exact celestial situation that you're viewing, simply by pointing your phone skyward.
Currently, the app is available to Android users for free. For an Apple supported alternative, check out Night Sky.
2. Heads Up!
Based off the legendary house party game, Heads Up! the app asks players to perform a bunch of hilarious actions, including celebrity impersonations and pantomiming for points. The best part? The app makes it easy for you and your friends to share videos from your very own game directly to social media. How cool is that?!
Whether you’re camping solo or with a big group, it’s always fun to document your experience. In addition to taking snapshots or journaling, why not broadcast your fireside chat or jam session to your followers back at home? Mixlr allows you to do this in real-time with no extra equipment necessary.
Mixlr can be downloaded on both the iTunes Store as well as Google Play.
4. Insight Timer
If you like to get centered around the campfire, try Insight Timer for an additional level of zen. Plug in your earbuds for some much-needed alone time or bring along your wireless speaker for a guided group meditation; with more than 7,000 music tracks, talks, and courses, you'll find whatever you need to chill out.
Insight Timer is free on both the App Store as well as Google Play.
5. Beyond Small Talk
A roaring campfire can really inspire people to open up -- but it’s not always easy to get that deep conversation started. For a digital icebreaker, we love Beyond Small Talk, an app that was made specifically to help users develop more meaningful relationships through a series of focused questions.
Beyond Small Talk is free on both the App Store and Google Play.
